I’m writing to urgently call your attention to the deportation of Maiker Espinoza Escalona and Yorley Bernal Inciarte, the Venezuelan parents of a 2-year-old daughter now stranded in U.S. foster care. According to multiple reports, including from ABC7 News, the family was forcibly separated under the Alien Enemies Act, with both parents deported to El Salvador—despite no criminal history and pending immigration proceedings.
The two adults were placed in asylum proceedings but they eventually asked for a deportation order to be reunited with their child, who is not a U.S. citizen.
But that would never happen. Escalona was transferred to Guantanamo Bay and then sent to the CECOT prison in El Salvador on March 30.
This is a blatant violation of due process and basic human decency.
I urge you to:
Investigate the legality and humanitarian impact of these deportations;
Push the Department of Homeland Security and HHS to explain how this family was torn apart;
Support legislation or executive action that immediately halts family separations under the Alien Enemies Act;
Demand reunification plans for Yorely and her parents.
Thank you for your leadership and swift response to this crisis.
