I have recently read about Gov. Newsom's statements that he does not support the use of trans and non-binary people's pronouns in conversations regarding politics. Years ago, it seemed like Newsom actually stood for civil rights and social justice. Now, it is clear that he just pays them lip-service to get votes, exactly like the lies of Republicans. The depth of my disappointment in the Governor is hard to convey.
This anti-trans, anti-non-binary, anti-gender-non-conformant rhetoric is straight out of Republican playbooks. No Democrat should be caught dead further marginalizing one of the most marginalized groups in our society.
I am an active voter. I vote in every election, and I vote on every race and ballot item.
It is clear that Newsom is no longer a valid Democratic candidate for any seat. I will not donate to any Newsom campaign. I will donate to any half-decent Democrats running against him. I will vote against Newsom in every single election where I have a vote (where there is any opponent is not actively worse).
The same goes for ANY Democrat who uncaringly throws trans people under the bus. I will never accept compromising people's humanity and right to self-determination.
I expect this issue to destroy Newsom's chances in any and every primary race so he will no longer be a stain on the reputation of the Democratic party, and so that we can have representation that actually respects the rights of Californians, and of Americans.
While the percentage of OUT trans and non-binary people is not large, the proportion seen amongst the youth today make it clear that there are many not-yet-out trans/non-binary/GNC Americans, and the trans community have many allies/advocates.
This is not an issue you can compromise with the right wing on, any more than you can compromise with the right wing on any other oppression or attempted genocide of marginalized groups of people.
I am sending this to you because I want you, and all of my representatives, to be very clear on the fact that this is an issue of huge importance to Democratic voters, and anyone who allies themselves with marginalized people.
