The decision by committee members to seek written assurances or verbal commitments from Todd Blanche ignores the obvious reality of this administration. RFK Jr. pledged under oath to respect CDC advisory panels—and then fired them. Kash Patel pledged 'no stone left unturned'—and then explicitly instructed agents not to pursue financial network leads. Pete Hegseth promised to protect the DoD Inspector General’s independence—then ordered that same office to investigate Gen. Mark Milley to strip his rank. Pam Bondi pledged an end to weaponized prosecutions—and then oversaw retaliatory filings against political rivals like James Comey and Letitia James. Extracting a written promise from Todd Blanche isn't "rigorous oversight"—it is providing political cover for a nominee who has already shown complete disdain for congressional authority and legal norms. This administration is not playing by traditional rules, and continuing to treat confirmation promises as meaningful safeguards does not make the Senate look institutionalist—it makes it look gullible. Do not let your advice-and-consent power be reduced to a punchline. Reject paper concessions and vote NO on Todd Blanche.
