Congress reauthorized and expanded Section 702 of FISA in April 2024 without fixing its most fundamental flaw: the FBI can search Americans' private communications without a warrant, based on nothing more than a suspicion of wrongdoing. That is not how the Fourth Amendment works, and you need to fix it before the next reauthorization. The abuse here is documented, not theoretical. Agencies have conducted millions of warrantless searches of Americans' data, with Muslim Americans, Asian American researchers, and racial justice protesters among those disproportionately targeted. This is the same playbook used against civil rights leaders decades ago, and Congress just handed the government more tools to do it. The reform is straightforward: require a warrant before searching any American's communications collected under Section 702. The next expiration is two years away. Start pushing for that requirement now, and commit publicly to blocking any reauthorization that doesn't include it.
