I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to take immediate action to address the growing threat posed by deepfakes and AI-generated videos that use the likeness and voices of real people without their consent.
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has made it increasingly easy for malicious actors to create and distribute convincing false videos and audio recordings. These technologies are already being misused to spread disinformation, damage reputations, commit fraud, and undermine public trust in our institutions. Left unchecked, the proliferation of deepfakes poses serious risks to individuals, businesses, and our democracy as a whole.
I respectfully ask that you champion legislation that:
Establishes clear restrictions on the unauthorized creation and distribution of AI-generated content using someone’s likeness or voice.
Provides legal protections and avenues for recourse for victims of deepfakes.
Requires transparency and watermarking of AI-generated media to help the public distinguish between authentic and synthetic content.
Holds accountable those who intentionally create or disseminate deceptive deepfake material for harmful purposes.
The ability to trust what we see and hear is a cornerstone of civil society. Without safeguards, we risk eroding that trust at a time when disinformation is already a significant challenge.
Please act swiftly to introduce and support legislation that protects Americans from the dangers of deepfake abuse.
Thank you for your time, attention, and service to our community.
