Urgent Opposition to H.R. 899

To: Rep. Stanton

From: A verified voter in Phoenix, AZ

February 2, 2025

I am writing to strongly urge you to oppose H.R. 899, a bill that seeks to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. As a concerned educator, parent and community member, I believe that dismantling the Department of Education would have devastating consequences for students, teachers, and the future of public education in our country. The Department of Education plays a critical role in ensuring equal access to quality education, enforcing civil rights protections, and providing essential funding and resources to schools, particularly those serving low-income and marginalized communities. Without this federal oversight, disparities in education will widen, leaving countless students without the support they need to succeed. Furthermore, the Department’s programs help fund special education services, Title I schools, and higher education grants that millions of students rely on to pursue their academic goals. Eliminating the Department would place an undue burden on states and local governments, many of which lack the resources to fill the gap. I urge you to stand with students, teachers, and families by opposing H.R. 899. Education is the foundation of a strong democracy and economy, and we must work to strengthen our schools—not dismantle the systems that support them. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response and to seeing you take a stand for the future of public education.
