I urge you to support invoking Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to declare Trump "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office" and remove him from office immediately. Surely, threatening military action against allies over territorial acquisition represents exactly the kind of incapacity the framers envisioned when this Amendment was written.
President Trump has refused to rule out military action against Denmark to acquire Greenland. He has threatened tariffs on European allies until Denmark complies with his demands. Most alarmingly, Trump reportedly wrote to Norway's Prime Minister linking his failure to win a Nobel Peace Prize to his Greenland efforts, stating he "no longer feels an obligation to think purely of peace." These statements demonstrate a dangerous departure from rational decision-making that threatens our national security and international standing.
Democratic lawmakers including Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Rep. Yassamin Ansari of Arizona, and Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California have already called for invoking the 25th Amendment, and even Republican lawmakers recognize the severity of this situation.
As Tom Nichols of The Atlantic wrote: “No one can be watching this Davos speech and reach any conclusion but that the President of the United States is mentally disturbed and that something is deeply wrong with him. This is both embarrassing and extremely dangerous.”
I understand the threshold is high - but the alternative is allowing a President who openly threatens peace and our alliances to remain in power. I urge you to publicly support invoking the 25th Amendment and work with colleagues to build the necessary support for this constitutional remedy.
