I am a constituent and I am writing to urge you to block funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and ultimately abolish it.
Since its creation in 2003, ICE has developed a record marked by systemic abuses, lack of transparency, and repeated failures of oversight. Documented patterns of inhumane detention conditions, family separation, wrongful deportations, and the targeting of long-standing community members have eroded public trust and caused lasting harm—often without improving public safety.
With the recent murders of Renee Good, Keith Porter, and Alex Pretti, it’s clear that ICE does not make this country more safe and is in fact endangering us.
Immigration enforcement does not require a standalone agency that operates with sweeping authority and minimal accountability. The core functions currently housed within ICE can be handled more effectively by existing agencies, while civil immigration matters should be treated as administrative issues rather than criminal ones. Abolishing ICE would allow Congress to rebuild immigration enforcement with clear limits, strong oversight, and a focus on due process and human dignity.
Moreover, communities are safer when immigrants can report crimes, seek medical care, and participate in civic life without fear. ICE’s current structure undermines these goals, discouraging cooperation with local authorities and destabilizing families and local economies.
I urge you to support legislation that dismantles ICE and replaces it with a system that prioritizes due process, community-based case management, and humane enforcement consistent with our laws and values.
I look forward to seeing you take meaningful action on this issue.
