Say NO to KOSA and the Screen Act

To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Houston, TX

August 5, 2025

I find the screen act and KOSA to be an egregious invasion of privacy. Growing up, we were taught not to give identifying information to the internet. Growing up, we were taught not to give our names. Not to give our address. Not to give our location. And now you’ve proposed bills that would force us to give identifying information and ignore the internet safety we’ve been taught for decades. We were taught not to upload our faces online, but these bills would have us upload an ID with our faces online, just to access the internet. Blocking kids from accessing the internet altogether, is not going to protect them, at all. I grew up in a household where my access to information was heavily monitored. I had to sneak onto the family computer at midnight just to learn basic information like science, menstruation, or even just to be able to do my homework. If these acts had been a thing, I would fail school, because I wouldn’t be able to do my homework. How are you going to make sure kids can succeed in school if they can’t access the internet? Lots of kids are in abusive households and find out about hotlines through the internet. Not being able to access the internet puts them in danger. Calling 9-1-1 puts them in danger if an abuser finds out. KOSA and the Screen act does more harm than good.
