Impeach President Trump for Threatening Government Hostage Crisis Over SAVE Act
To: Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno, Rep. Joyce
From: A constituent in Willoughby, OH
March 9
I am writing to urge you to immediately initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump under Article 2, Section 4 of the Constitution for his threat to refuse signing any legislation until Congress passes the SAVE America Act. This constitutes an abuse of power that threatens the basic functioning of our government and the voting rights of millions of Americans.
On Sunday, President Trump announced via Truth Social that he will not sign any bills until the SAVE Act passes, stating it "supersedes everything else" and "MUST GO TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE." He previously told NBC News "I would close government over it." This threat comes as the government faces a partial shutdown over Department of Homeland Security funding. The President is effectively holding the entire legislative process hostage to force passage of a single bill that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer correctly identified would "disenfranchise tens of millions of people."
The SAVE Act would impose proof of citizenship requirements for voter registration nationwide, creating barriers to voting despite the fact that noncitizen voting is already illegal and uncommon in the United States. Trump has even expanded his demands beyond the House-passed version to include unrelated provisions on transgender issues that are not in the legislation. This represents a fundamental misuse of presidential authority to coerce Congress into passing voter suppression legislation.
The President's refusal to fulfill his constitutional duty to sign or veto legislation based on its individual merits constitutes high crimes and misdemeanors. His actions threaten government operations, harm federal workers and contractors, and undermine the separation of powers. Article 2, Section 4 provides the remedy for such abuses.
I urge you to act immediately to hold President Trump accountable through impeachment proceedings. Our democratic institutions and the voting rights of American citizens depend on swift action to stop this constitutional crisis.
