Protecting Government Oversight and Inspector General Independence

I am writing to express serious concern about the erosion of government oversight and the weakening of inspector general independence within the federal government. Recent reporting highlights that inspectors general, who are meant to serve as independent watchdogs guarding against waste, fraud, and abuse, are facing unprecedented political pressure. In the early days of the current administration, inspectors general across numerous federal agencies were removed and replaced, in many cases with individuals viewed as politically aligned rather than nonpartisan. Equally troubling, oversight offices have experienced staffing reductions and increased control from political appointees, including new requirements for approval over hiring and funding decisions. This undermines the very purpose of these offices, which is to independently investigate misconduct without interference. There are also reports of watchdog findings being altered, delayed, or suppressed after agency review. If true, this represents a fundamental breakdown in transparency and accountability. When oversight bodies cannot operate freely, the public loses its ability to trust that government actions are being properly scrutinized. Inspectors general exist to serve the American people, not any administration, party, or political agenda. Their independence is essential to maintaining checks and balances within our system of government. I urge you to take action to reinforce legal protections for inspector general independence, ensure transparency in any removal or replacement of watchdog officials, oppose efforts that allow political interference in audits and investigations, and support adequate funding and staffing for oversight offices. Government oversight is not a partisan issue. It is a constitutional necessity. Without it, the risk of unchecked power, misuse of taxpayer funds, and erosion of public trust grows significantly. I ask that you stand firmly in defense of independent oversight and work with your colleagues to restore and protect these critical safeguards.
