For your legacy, for democracy!
To: Pres. Biden
From: A constituent in Chicago, IL
July 20, 2024
I hope this letter finds you well. I write to you as a lifelong Democrat who has always supported your vision and leadership. Your presidency has brought about significant achievements, and for that, I am deeply grateful. However, I feel compelled to share my concerns regarding the upcoming election.
Despite your accomplishments, I no longer believe that you are positioned to secure victory against Donald Trump. The stakes are too high for us to risk another four years under Republican control. The consequences for minorities and vulnerable communities could be devastating, as we have seen how Republican policies have adversely impacted these groups.
Your refusal to step aside and allow another candidate to lead our party is reminiscent of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's decision not to retire. While her contributions to justice were unparalleled, her decision contributed to the current extreme composition of the Supreme Court. We cannot afford to make a similar mistake at this critical juncture in our nation's history.
Mr. President, your legacy is already secure as a leader who has achieved much for our country. However, if you continue to pursue this path, history may remember you as the last president before democracy faltered. I urge you to consider the greater good and step down gracefully, allowing a new candidate to carry forward the torch.
Thank you for your understanding and for all that you have done for our nation.
