The Department of Defense’s decision to cease official recognition of cultural awareness months is deeply concerning and has harmful implications. These observances serve a vital purpose in fostering understanding, appreciation, and unity within our military’s diverse ranks. Celebrating the invaluable contributions and perspectives of service members from all backgrounds strengthens our readiness and cohesion as a fighting force. Discontinuing events and resources dedicated to commemorating the histories, struggles, and triumphs of various ethnic, gender, and other cultural groups risks alienating and marginalizing significant portions of our personnel.
This misguided policy sends a demoralizing message that their identities are not valued, undermining their sense of belonging and morale. Diverse perspectives and experiences enhance our strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities, ultimately making us more agile and effective on the battlefield. Erasing these cultural touchstones will only breed resentment, fracture unit cohesion, and inhibit the open exchange of ideas that underpins military strength.
I urge you to take immediate action to reinstate official recognition of cultural heritage months within the Department of Defense. Please provide a clear plan on how you intend to address the concerns raised in this letter and ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion remain a priority within our military.
I look forward to your response and a concrete plan of action on this issue. Given that this policy change took effect at the start of Black History Month, I urge you to take immediate action to reverse it. Swift reinstatement of cultural heritage observances would demonstrate a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our military. Our service members deserve to know that their contributions and identities are valued.
Thank you for your time and commitment to those who serve.
