I am writing to demand you publicly condemn the violent actions of CBP and ICE against immigrants regardless of status, citizens , peaceful observers, and protesters in Minneapolis and across this nation and to oppose ICE raids here in Ohio. I urge you to pass legislation that restricts local police from cooperating with ICE, such as limiting the honoring of ICE detainers and collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration agents. Local police departments need to stop sharing data with ICE, stop participating in 287(g) agreements, and stop ICE arrests in courthouses. When local police collaborate with ICE, immigrants are afraid to report crimes, making the whole community less safe. Raids separate families and destroy local businesses and communities. This madness needs to end and we need to allow due process and accountability to remain the standard not just for some but for all. And demand Congress make meaningful immigration reform that champions the humanity and dignity of all. Allowing these processes to erode and enabling this abuse of power undermines our integrity and makes us all vulnerable to the whims of a few to withhold resources and scapegoats the marginalized and rather than making tangible progress towards safer, healthier, communities where we can all thrive.
