END and ABOLISH ICE

To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Tran, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in Fullerton, CA

July 14

End ICE. Defund it entirely, close every detention center, and say so publicly. This isn't a fringe position — it's the only rational response to an agency that has killed more people since January 2025 than in the previous two decades combined. 2025 saw the highest number of deaths in ICE custody since the agency was founded, and 2026 is already running at more than double last year's pace. These aren't abstractions. A medical examiner ruled one death a homicide after ICE called it a suicide. A 32-year-old was found hanging with his hands and feet bound. A visually-impaired man was abandoned in the cold in New York and died. A second person was killed in Maine in front of a child — someone who wasn't even the target of the detention. This is a paramilitary force operating without accountability, not a civil immigration agency. Over 70% of people in detention have no criminal record. There is no justification for any of this. A temporary pause on traffic stops is not reform. I need you to go on record demanding the abolition of ICE, the elimination of its funding, and the closure of all detention facilities — including those run by GEO Group and CoreCivic. The people dying in these facilities deserve more than silence from their elected representatives.
