Your administration needs to fundamentally change its approach to Russia's war on Ukraine. Sending Kushner and Witkoff to negotiate with the Kremlin like it's a real estate deal is dangerously naive. Putin has said openly, through his own advisors, that the goal is to do away with Ukraine "as a viable state." This is not a border dispute. It is an imperial war of extermination, and treating it like a zoning negotiation is an embarrassment and a catastrophe.
Russia's foreign policy strategist Sergei Karaganov told reporters this week that if Europe doesn't "surrender," Russia will go nuclear. Putin's newly elected parliament gives him more power than ever. His forces are striking Ukraine daily with ballistic missiles and drones, and Moscow is counting on our side running out of air defense missiles this winter. Every week we spend flattering the Kremlin is a week Putin uses to tighten the noose.
Stop rewarding aggression with diplomacy theater. Ukraine needs sustained military and financial support, not a deal brokered by people who think Putin wants a handshake and a commission. History will not forgive a capitulation dressed up as a peace process.
