Stephen Miller's plan to suspend habeas corpus poses a grave threat to our constitutional democracy. Habeas corpus, the right to challenge unlawful detention, serves as a critical safeguard against overreach and authoritarianism. Stripping away this fundamental protection would eliminate a crucial check on executive power and open the door to arbitrary imprisonment without due process. History has shown time and again that unchecked authority breeds oppression and tyranny. We cannot allow our nation to backslide into the kind of despotism our founders risked everything to escape. Preserving habeas corpus is vital to upholding the rule of law and preventing the United States from devolving into a police state. As a democratically elected official, you have a solemn duty to defend the Constitution and the liberties it enshrines. Remaining silent in the face of this egregious assault on civil liberties would be an unconscionable dereliction of that duty. Stand firm in this pivotal moment as a guardian of our Republic. History will not look kindly on those who failed to raise their voices against the embrace of autocracy. The future of American freedom hangs in the balance.
