Put a Scientist Back in Charge of Americans’ Health

August 20

Dear Representative, The Food and Drug Administration is the reason Americans can trust that their medicine, food, and medical devices are safe. Under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and accelerated by DOGE staffing cuts, that agency is being stripped of the people and the capacity it needs to do that job. History gives us every reason for caution. The FDA exists because unregulated markets once sold contaminated food and fraudulent cures. Financial deregulation preceded the 2008 collapse. The pattern is consistent: when oversight is removed, the risk does not disappear. It shifts onto consumers, while the savings accrue to the companies that were being regulated. A public health agency answers to the public, not to the industries it oversees. Cutting scientists, inspectors, and reviewers to satisfy a deregulatory agenda inverts that duty. It trades the safety of ordinary people for the convenience of corporate interests. We ask you to: • Publicly call for new leadership at HHS and the removal of Secretary Kennedy. • Insist that FDA leadership hold relevant scientific and medical qualifications. • Support restoring the FDA staffing and funding eliminated through DOGE. • Demand oversight hearings on how these cuts have affected drug review, food safety, and inspection capacity. Sincerely, A Voting Constituent
