Support Permanent Standard Time, Not Permanent Daylight Time

To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Rep. Khanna

From: A constituent in Santa Clara, CA

July 15

I want to end the twice-a-year clock change too — that part isn’t controversial. But there are two ways to do it, and the House picked the wrong one. Permanent daylight time keeps clocks an hour ahead of the sun forever; permanent standard time keeps clocks aligned with it. The difference isn’t political, it’s biological. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, along with 20 other medical and scientific organizations, has formally endorsed permanent standard time specifically because it matches human circadian rhythm, while permanent daylight time chronically misaligns it. Under permanent DST, winter sunrise would come as late as 8:30–9 a.m. across much of the northern U.S., meaning months of children waiting at school bus stops in darkness — the same problem that got the U.S. to repeal its 1974 permanent-DST experiment within a year, following a rise in child pedestrian accidents. I’m asking you to support permanent standard time, not permanent daylight time, when this reaches the Senate. Please don’t lock in a schedule the country already tried and rejected. Thank you for your time and attention to this.
