Stop the Political Persecution of Dr. Fauci

To: Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks

From: A verified voter in Arnold, MD

August 6

The 8-7 party-line contempt vote against Dr. Anthony Fauci is a politically motivated attack on a public servant who dedicated decades to protecting American lives. Sen. Rand Paul has openly admitted his goal is to see Fauci "behind bars" — and Fauci himself said so in his opening statement. That is not oversight. That is a vendetta dressed up in congressional procedure. Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment because Republicans publicly stated the hearing's purpose was to catch him in perjury. That is a constitutionally protected right, and punishing someone for exercising it sets a dangerous precedent for every future witness before Congress. Ranking member Gary Peters was right: this vote damages the committee's credibility and erodes constitutional protections the Senate has long recognized. Paul is now bypassing a full Senate vote entirely — a move he himself admitted has little precedent — to rush a referral to the Justice Department. Dr. Fauci is a national hero who guided this country through one of its worst public health crises. Speak out against this contempt referral, push back on Paul's procedural end-run, and make clear that weaponizing congressional subpoena power to settle political scores will not go unanswered.
