IF YOU CAN REGISTER THEM FOR WAR, YOU CAN REGISTER THEM TO VOTE
To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Nunn
From: A verified voter in Des Moines, IA
April 11
I am writing about a contradiction so glaring it demands an immediate answer. In December 2025, Congress passed — and President Trump signed — the fiscal year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. Inside it was a historic change: American men will now be automatically registered for the military draft within 30 days of their 18th birthdays, without any action required on their part. The government will use its own federal data — Social Security records and other existing databases — to enroll them automatically. Failure to comply is a federal felony, carrying fines of up to $250,000 and five years in prison. You voted for that bill. You endorsed the logic: the government already has the data, so the government should handle registration. So I have one question: If the federal government can use its own data to automatically register young Americans to potentially die for their country, why on earth can it not use that same data to automatically register them to vote? The technology is not the barrier. The data is not the barrier. The political will is the barrier — and that is entirely your responsibility. Before you raise the issue of fraud, consider this: 24 states and the District of Columbia have already enacted automatic voter registration — including Republican-led states like Georgia and Alaska. It works. It saves money. It has not produced the fraud that opponents predicted. The argument that automatic voter registration is too dangerous to implement has been disproven by nearly half the country. And consider this: your own administration is already using Social Security Administration data, cross-referenced with DHS databases, to verify and purge voter rolls. The federal government has already proven it can use this data for voter registration purposes. It is using it to remove people. I am asking you to also use it to include eligible citizens. Furthermore, draft registration law already includes an opt-out for conscientious objectors — men who have religious or moral objections may file a claim and be exempt. Every automatic voter registration bill before Congress today includes the same opt-out. Congress already accepted this principle for military enrollment. Applying it equally to voting is not a radical idea. It is the same idea. The legislation to fix this already exists and is waiting for your support: — The Register America to Vote Act (S. 2822) would automatically register eligible citizens at age 18 using the same federal data infrastructure Congress just authorized for draft registration. — The Vote at Home Act (S. 1887 / H.R. 2847) includes automatic voter registration through existing government systems. — The Restoring Faith in Elections Act (H.R. 160) does the same. Here is what I am asking you to do: 1. CO-SPONSOR one or more of the above bills and publicly call for a floor vote. If you believe automatic registration is efficient and appropriate for the draft, you must apply that standard equally to voting. If you will not, I want your explanation on record. 2. OPPOSE legislation — including the SAVE America Act — that adds new documentation barriers to voter registration that do not exist for draft registration. You cannot justify automating one and obstructing the other. A passport should not be required to vote when no passport is required to be registered for war. 3. ANSWER THIS QUESTION IN WRITING: Do you believe it should be easier for the government to register a young American for potential military combat than it is for that same American to cast a ballot? The right to vote is the foundation of every other right in a democracy — including the right to choose the leaders who decide whether to send our children to war. If we can automate one, we must automate both. Anything less is a statement about whose participation in democracy you actually want. I expect a written response by April 25, 2026. I will be sharing your response — or your silence — publicly.
