Demand an End to Trump’s Political Use of Troops in Portland

To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Nunn

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

September 28, 2025

I am writing to demand that you take immediate action to stop the deployment of U.S. troops to Portland. Using our service men and women for political theater should disgust every elected official who claims to value democracy and the Constitution. These troops are being sent in response to protests near ICE facilities — protests that have largely been peaceful expressions of dissent. Oregon’s leaders did not request this intervention. This is not public safety; it is a dangerous political stunt that escalates conflict, threatens civilians, and wastes taxpayer dollars. I urge you to: • Demand the immediate withdrawal of all federal troops from Portland. • Investigate the legality of this deployment and whether it violates the Posse Comitatus Act. • Hold the President accountable for this reckless abuse of power and prevent future misuse of the military for political purposes. Portland is not a war zone. Allowing a president to treat it like one sets a precedent that erodes civil liberties and the rule of law. I expect you to act decisively to defend Oregon and the constitutional limits on executive power.
