I am writing to you today with serious concern regarding recent actions by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that I believe constitute a direct attack on free speech and the First Amendment.
I am specifically referring to the FCC's recent actions and public statements concerning the broadcast licenses of networks like ABC, following the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's show. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr's public suggestion that the agency could revoke broadcast licenses based on content that he personally finds objectionable is a dangerous overreach of power. This is not about the specific content of a television show; it is about the government using its regulatory authority to intimidate and silence speech it dislikes.
This situation is made even more alarming by a clear double standard. Recently, a Fox News host, Brian Kilmeade, publicly suggested that mentally ill homeless people should be given "involuntary lethal injection" and stated "Just kill 'em." While this was a deeply disturbing and dangerous comment, he was permitted to remain on the air after a brief apology. The fact that a host could advocate for lethal violence against a vulnerable population with minimal consequence, while another is removed from the air for political commentary, exposes the politically motivated nature of these regulatory threats.
This kind of government-driven censorship is a clear violation of the principles our nation was founded upon. The FCC's role should be to regulate broadcasting in the public interest, not to act as a political censor or to weaponize its power against media outlets for political gain. The decision to take a show off the air based on this pressure sets a dangerous precedent for all forms of media.
As my elected representative, I urge you to take immediate action to hold the FCC accountable. Please publicly condemn these actions and work with your colleagues in the Senate to introduce and support legislation that would prevent the FCC from using its authority to suppress protected speech. We must ensure that government agencies cannot use the threat of regulatory action to chill free expression and that there is one consistent standard for all.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I look forward to your response and your commitment to protecting the First Amendment rights of your constituents
