To: Rep. Mathis, Gov. Hobbs, Rep. Gutierrez, Sen. Sundareshan

This bill raises concerning issues regarding transgender rights and the ability to update identity documents in accordance with one's gender identity. Mandating biological sex designations on identity documents can have severely detrimental impacts on the mental health and safety of transgender individuals. It creates unnecessary barriers and stigma. Gender markers should be based on an individual's self-identified gender, not sex assigned at birth. Forcing transgender people to carry documentation misaligned with their identity puts them at risk of discrimination, harassment, and even violence. This bill is out of step with best practices and violates privacy rights. I urge you to oppose any legislation that impedes a person's fundamental right to self-determination of their gender identity and expression. Transgender people deserve to have their identities fully recognized and respected.
