I am writing to urge you to oppose any cuts or efforts to eliminate the Federal Communications Commission’s E-Rate program. E-Rate is an essential investment in our nation’s schools and libraries, helping ensure that students, families, educators, and communities have access to the broadband connectivity they need. Libraries are far more than places to borrow books. They are community technology hubs where people access computers, reliable internet, digital resources, online education, employment opportunities, government services, and essential information. For individuals who do not have dependable broadband at home, the public library may be their primary connection to the digital world. E-Rate helps make this access possible by supporting the telecommunications and broadband infrastructure that libraries and schools rely on every day. Reducing or eliminating this support would place an additional financial burden on local communities and could force libraries to make difficult choices about technology, internet access, staffing, and services. The need for reliable, affordable broadband has only grown. Students increasingly depend on online resources for homework and learning. Adults use library internet access to apply for jobs, complete training, access healthcare and government services, and participate in an increasingly digital economy. Rural and underserved communities can be especially vulnerable when funding for connectivity is reduced. Investing in E-Rate is not simply an investment in technology—it is an investment in opportunity. Strong libraries and schools help create educated, connected, and economically resilient communities. Every child should have the ability to complete their schoolwork, and every community member should have access to the digital resources necessary to participate fully in modern society. I respectfully ask you to stand up for libraries, schools, students, families, and communities across our country by opposing cuts to the E-Rate program and supporting continued federal investment in reliable broadband connectivity. Please protect E-Rate and the vital role it plays in keeping our communities connected.
