Urge Support for Sanctuary Cities in Michigan

To: Sen. Nesbitt, Rep. Andrews, Gov. Whitmer

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

October 10

I am writing to express my strong support for sanctuary cities in Michigan and to urge you to take action to protect and expand these vital community safeguards. Sanctuary cities play a crucial role in fostering trust between local law enforcement and immigrant communities, ultimately enhancing public safety for all residents. By limiting cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, sanctuary policies encourage undocumented immigrants to report crimes, seek medical care, and participate in their communities without fear of deportation. This approach not only upholds our values of inclusivity and compassion but also contributes to more effective community policing. Michigan's diverse population includes many immigrant families who contribute significantly to our state's economy and cultural fabric. Sanctuary policies help ensure that these valuable community members can live and work without constant fear, allowing them to fully participate in and contribute to our society. I urge you to support legislation that would protect and expand sanctuary policies in Michigan. This could include measures to prohibit local law enforcement from inquiring about immigration status, limit information sharing with federal immigration authorities, and ensure equal access to public services regardless of immigration status. The implementation of sanctuary policies does not mean ignoring federal law. Rather, it allows local resources to be focused on local priorities, reducing the burden on our police forces and allowing them to concentrate on serious crimes that directly impact our communities. By supporting sanctuary cities, you would be standing up for the rights and dignity of all Michigan residents, regardless of their immigration status. This is not just a moral imperative but a practical one that will lead to safer, more cohesive communities across our state. I ask that you make this a priority in your legislative agenda and work towards making Michigan a more welcoming and just place for all.
