Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, where authorities have detained him in a notorious prison despite court orders mandating his return to the United States. This flagrant disregard for judicial directives and human rights sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the rule of law. Abrego Garcia's case has become entangled in the Trump administration's quest to expand presidential power over immigration matters. However, the evidence does not substantiate claims that he is a terrorist or gang member warranting such extreme treatment. A federal immigration judge previously ruled he could not be deported to El Salvador due to threats on his life there. Keeping Abrego Garcia imprisoned in El Salvador violates his legal protections and human rights as a U.S. resident. It is imperative that the administration take all available diplomatic steps to secure his immediate release and safe return home to his family. Failing to do so would further erode judicial authority and America's standing as a nation that upholds democratic values.
