Oppose the MEGA Act's Voter Restrictions and State Authority Overreach

To: Rep. Ciscomani, Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly

From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ

February 9

I am writing to urge you to oppose the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act introduced by House Republicans on January 29th, 2026. This legislation would impose unnecessary federal restrictions on voting that disenfranchise millions of Americans while undermining states' constitutional authority to administer their own elections. The MEGA Act would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID to vote, despite tens of millions of Americans lacking the necessary documentation. These requirements disproportionately impact people with disabilities, younger voters, and Black and Hispanic communities. This is not a theoretical concern. These are your constituents who would lose their fundamental right to participate in our democracy. Beyond voter ID requirements, the bill represents an unprecedented federal intrusion into state election administration. It would force states to discard mail-in ballots received after polls close on election day, ban universal vote by mail systems, and prohibit ranked choice voting in federal elections. These mandates strip away states' constitutional authority to design election systems that work for their residents. The justification for these sweeping changes is combating election fraud, yet election fraud in the United States is vanishingly rare. We should not spend taxpayer money implementing expensive new restrictions and disenfranchising millions of eligible voters to address a problem that does not exist at any meaningful scale. The real threat to election integrity is not fraud but deliberate efforts to undermine public confidence in our electoral system and create barriers to participation. States have successfully administered elections for over two centuries. They do not need federal mandates that make voting harder for eligible citizens. I ask you to publicly oppose the MEGA Act and vote against it if it comes to the floor. Our democracy is strengthened when more eligible citizens can participate, not when we erect unnecessary barriers to the ballot box.
