The ongoing government shutdown, now in its 36th day, is causing unnecessary harm to our nation. I urge you to support bipartisan negotiations to end this impasse and address critical healthcare issues simultaneously.
Recent election results have demonstrated that Americans understand the true cause of this shutdown: the refusal of Republican leadership to engage in meaningful dialogue. Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries have repeatedly requested meetings with President Trump to resolve this crisis, but their efforts have been rebuffed.
The American people deserve a government that functions and addresses their needs. Healthcare, particularly the extension of Obamacare subsidies, is a pressing concern that cannot be ignored. The insistence by some that the government must be reopened before discussing healthcare is a false choice that only prolongs the suffering of federal workers and citizens who depend on government services.
Senators from both parties are already engaging in talks to find a solution. This willingness to work across the aisle should be embraced and expanded. The complexity of these issues requires thoughtful, bipartisan negotiation – not ultimatums or preconditions.
I ask that you publicly support immediate, comprehensive negotiations that address both the shutdown and healthcare concerns. Urge your party leadership to come to the table without preconditions. The American people have spoken through their votes; they want a government that works together to solve problems, not one paralyzed by partisan obstruction.
Time is of the essence. Each day of this shutdown costs our economy millions and denies critical services to those in need. By supporting bipartisan talks now, you can help break this deadlock and demonstrate true leadership in service of your constituents and our nation.
