The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) is a deeply concerning piece of legislation that threatens free speech and online privacy. While the stated goal is to protect children, the vague language around companies' "duty of care" will inevitably lead to widespread censorship of legal content. Platforms will face immense pressure to over-censor and remove anything that could be deemed "harmful," stifling open discourse. Moreover, the push for age verification raises significant privacy risks, as these systems have proven insecure and would compel users to hand over sensitive personal data. This is an unacceptable infringement on privacy rights and anonymity online. Rather than censor legal speech, we should empower parents with tools to monitor their children's online activities as they see fit. Protecting free expression and privacy must be the top priority. I urge you to reject KOSA and any legislation that undermines these core democratic values in the name of a moral panic. We cannot sacrifice our fundamental rights on the altar of an illusory concept of online "safety."
