Oppose ICE Detention Facility on San Antonio's East Side
To: Sen. Eckhardt, Rep. Cole
From: A constituent in Manor, TX
April 19
I'm asking you to block the ICE detention facility planned for San Antonio's East Side and oppose federal funding for detention expansion. The $66 million Oakmont 410 property purchase will bring a 1,500-bed processing facility into our residential neighborhoods, near schools, parks, churches, and family homes.
This facility doesn't make our community safer. ICE claims 70% of arrests involve people charged or convicted of crimes, but that means 30% don't. Detention facilities separate families, traumatize children, and drain resources that could address actual public safety needs. San Antonio has already restricted new detention facilities because we know they harm our neighborhoods.
The Trump administration is using funding from the "One Big Beautiful Bill" to expand detention nationwide. This isn't about public safety. It's about mass incarceration of immigrants in our backyards. Mayor Jones has asked DHS to back off, and the city is exploring legal options. We need you to stand with San Antonio and fight this at the federal level. Block funding for detention expansion and support alternatives to incarceration that keep families together.
