I am writing to express my deep alarm and outrage at recent rhetoric suggesting that the United States should threaten, coerce, or seek control over Greenland. There is absolutely nothing acceptable about threatening our allies. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a NATO ally. Under the NATO treaty, the United States is already obligated to defend Denmark, including Greenland, against external threats. If Russia or China were to threaten Greenland, the United States would be required to respond alongside other NATO nations. The idea that the United States must intimidate or seize territory from an ally in order to protect its interests is false, reckless, and destabilizing. This is not a security necessity. It is intimidation. The people of Greenland have made their wishes clear. By large margins, they do not want to become part of the United States. They have spent decades working toward greater self-determination and sovereignty, not surrendering it. Becoming Americans would not benefit them. In fact, it would likely cause significant harm. Greenlanders currently have universal healthcare, education, paid leave, and social protections that are not guaranteed in the United States. There is no credible case that their lives would improve by being absorbed into our political system. What is being proposed instead resembles imperialism: the desire to control land, extract resources, and expand power regardless of the will of the people who live there. That is colonialism. It is morally wrong. And it is deeply embarrassing. Threatening Greenland risks fracturing NATO at a time when unity is essential. It sends a message to our allies that U.S. commitments are conditional and that treaties can be discarded when power or profit is at stake. That is how alliances collapse and global instability grows. I am also deeply concerned by efforts to dismiss this rhetoric as “just talk.” History shows that when leaders fixate on territorial expansion, they often mean it. Repetition normalizes dangerous ideas, and silence enables them. This must be taken seriously. I urge you to publicly reaffirm U.S. commitment to NATO and to Denmark’s sovereignty, reject any rhetoric or policy aimed at coercing or annexing Greenland, and make clear that the United States does not seize land from its allies. We do not have the right to take what is not ours. We do not have the right to threaten allies. And we do not have the right to return to imperialism under the guise of national interest. I expect my elected representatives to stand firmly against this.
