Why Is the Military Jailing an Officer for Speaking His Mind? I am asking you to investigate the prosecution of Air Force Major Jason Watson and demand answers about why a serving officer is sitting in solitary confinement for calling for President Trump’s impeachment. On July 1, 2026, Watson stood on the Capitol steps in his Air Force uniform holding a sign reading “impeach, convict, remove,” citing U.S. military actions in Venezuela, Cuba and Iran as his reasons. Capitol Police detained him that day. After he criticized Trump again during a CNN interview on August 17, the Air Force took him into custody a second time and ordered pretrial confinement on August 18. On August 24, he was formally charged with ten specifications under the Uniform Code of Military Justice — three counts of contempt toward officials, five of disobeying orders, and two of conduct unbecoming an officer. His attorney says Watson is effectively held in solitary “for his safety.” The contempt provision driving these counts, Article 88, has produced only one court-martial conviction since the UCMJ took effect in 1951 — meaning the government is treating one man’s protest as more dangerous than nearly 75 years of dissent within the ranks combined.
