Please Assert Congress’s War Powers Authority

To: Rep. DeGette, Sen. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet

From: A constituent in Denver, CO

March 10

I am writing to urge you to uphold Congress’s constitutional responsibility over decisions of war and military force. The Constitution gives Congress—not the executive branch alone—the authority to declare war and to provide oversight of military actions. Regardless of which administration is in power, it is essential that Congress assert and protect its war powers. Allowing any administration to act without clear congressional authorization risks undermining the constitutional balance of powers and the democratic accountability that comes with it. Please take concrete steps to ensure that any significant use of U.S. military force receives proper congressional debate, authorization, and oversight. This includes enforcing the War Powers Resolution and requiring transparency about ongoing or potential military operations. Our system works best when each branch of government fulfills its role. I hope you will stand up for Congress’s constitutional authority and the responsibility it carries. Thank you for your service and for considering my views.
