Donald Trump often refers to Democrats as scum, vermin, the enemy within. His homeland security secretary speaks of “liberating” Democratic strongholds of their elected officials. And now, Democratic politicians are being handcuffed, thrown to the ground, and in one case, indicted for doing their jobs. It would be naive of us not to see the connection between these actions and the horrific assassination, murder and attempted murders that took place in Minnesota last weekend. We are in a very dangerous place, most likely to get worse before it gets better. I pray for the safety of all of you who are speaking out against this cruel regime. I thank you for all that you are doing to bring this country back from the abyss of authoritarian rule. And I hope I live to see the day that Trump and Trumpism is nothing more than a filthy stain on the American story.
