Cuts to vital anti-poverty programs like Medicaid and SNAP would have devastating consequences for millions of Americans who rely on these services. The potential $1.5 trillion in spending cuts proposed in the House budget plan, including $880 billion from Medicaid and $230 billion from SNAP, threaten to strip away essential healthcare coverage and food assistance from vulnerable populations. While fiscal responsibility is important, these draconian cuts disproportionately impact low-income families, people with disabilities, and the elderly. Reforms should not come at the expense of those most in need. We cannot balance the budget on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens. Many House Republicans represent districts with significant numbers of Medicaid and SNAP beneficiaries. Constituents in these areas stand to suffer greatly if these programs are gutted. The cuts could also place an increased burden on state budgets and local communities ill-equipped to fill the gaps. I urge you to reject these harmful cuts and instead explore more equitable solutions that do not jeopardize the well-being of struggling Americans. A strong social safety net is not only moral, but an investment in a healthy, productive society. Please prioritize people over profits and ensure access to healthcare and nutrition remains protected.
