An Open Letter
To: Rep. Stauber
From: A verified voter in Princeton, MN
May 22
I am writing again as your constituent to request a clear explanation of how you support Speaker Mike Johnson’s decision not to bring the War Powers Resolution to the floor for a vote.
This resolution concerns Congress’s constitutional authority over the use of military force. Blocking a vote prevents members from publicly stating their position and prevents Minnesotans from knowing where their elected representatives stand on continued U.S. military action.
I am asking you to explain:
- Why you support the Speaker’s choice to withhold the War Powers Resolution from a vote
- How preventing a vote aligns with Congress’s constitutional responsibility to authorize or limit military action
- What standard you believe should trigger congressional debate on war powers
- How constituents are expected to evaluate your position when you are not allowed to cast one
These decisions have real consequences for service members, families, and national stability. Your constituents deserve transparency on why this vote was blocked and why you support that decision.
I look forward to your response.
