Wealth Buys Citizenship. Lawfulness Gets You Deported?

To: Sen. Husted, Rep. Carey, Sen. Moreno

From: A constituent in Columbus, OH

April 7

I’m writing to express my outrage over the wrongful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was here lawfully, had no criminal record, and had been granted protection by a court. Deporting him—an innocent man—into a dangerous prison in El Salvador isn’t just an “administrative error.” It’s a disgraceful failure of due process, morality, and basic human decency. This is not an isolated incident. It reflects a pattern of carelessness and unjust discrimination that is destroying lives. We cannot accept this kind of reckless behavior from the agencies entrusted with upholding our laws. Where is the accountability? Where is our humanity? And where, in all of this, is our “liberty and justice for all”? We are supposed to be a nation of immigrants—a place that once prided itself on being a refuge for the tired, the poor, the huddled masses. Now, that promise has been warped. We’re seeing policies that devalue the lives of everyday people seeking safety and opportunity, while at the same time promoting a $5 million “Gold Card” pathway to citizenship for the ultra-wealthy. Is this what our immigration system has become—a pay-to-stay program for billionaires, while families are ripped apart for paperwork errors? We’re better than this. Or at least, we should be. Kicking people out who are here lawfully doesn’t make us safer or stronger—it makes us look selfish, cruel, and deeply hypocritical. I never supported building walls or turning our back on those in need. We should be welcoming new people, new ideas, and new cultures—not closing the door in their faces. I urge you to speak out against these injustices and demand stronger safeguards, greater accountability, and a return to the values we claim to stand for. We are losing not only our moral standing in the world—but our very soul as a nation.
