Protect Free Speech Online
To: Sen. Kelly, Sen. Gallego, Rep. Crane
From: A verified voter in Prescott Valley, AZ
December 20
For the following bills, I want to urge Arizona representatives to oppose them, and vote "No" should it come to a vote before them. Kids Online Safety Act S.1748 STOP CSAM act of 2025 S.1829/H.R.3921 Interstate Obscenity Definition Act S.1671/ H.R. 3297 SCREEN ACT S.737 FADPA H.R.791 Block BEARD Act ISSUE 1: PAYPROS CENSORSHIP The issue I'd like to bring up is how big payment processors and credit card companies, like Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Paypal, have recently been putting pressure on digital storefronts like Itch.io and Steam, in order to force them to remove products that contain adult content or certain themes that these companies personally feel is, quote, "risky for their brand". These payment processors have a long history of targeting otherwise perfectly legal adult content and denying their services, or in some cases even outright stealing their money such as with Paypal. I don't think it's right that these huge payment processors should have a say in what kind of legal content I can purchase with my own money. They are imposing their own values on thousands, if not millions, of businesses in a way that feels antithetical to the concept of freedom of speech and the pursuit of happiness. I want to urge the congressman to look into this issue further and help the American people affected by these puritanical businesses. ISSUE 2: PROTECTIONS FOR ART AND 'ADULT CONTENT' For the next issue, I believe that all human expression, including Adult Content, so long as it is produced between consenting parties, should be protected as free speech. Bills like Texas's recently passed "SB-20" seek to define large swaths of art and fiction as criminal, as do additional bills like the IODA. Adult content, and art and media which has been associated with adult content, has long been targeted by corporate powers like Credit Card companies and Payment Processors, leading to debanking and disenfranchisement of creators of legal work. I would ask that Arizona representatives seek to legislate additional protections for art and expression as well as repeal vague and draconian 'obscenity' laws so those who create and consume Adult Content cannot be wrongfully targeted and marginalized. ISSUE 3: ONLINE ID LAWS AND PRIVACY Lastly, I wish to express that I oppose ID-Verification laws. In a time where data breaches and identity theft has become rampant, imposing ID laws just to use a website is putting the sensitive data of both adults AND minors at extremely high risk. This is not like getting carded to buy an adult magazine or alcohol. This would be comparable to letting every cornerstore I shop at carry a copy of my ID. Additionally, ID verification is prohibitively expensive and would only further entrench corporate powers as the only viable platforms online, killing small businesses and websites.
