I'm writing today in regards to HR 899, the legislation introduced on January 31,2025, "To eliminate the department of education." While the text of this bill is not yet available on the congressional website, its very title is extremely alarming. I am strongly opposed to any efforts to dismantle the department of education.
Since the commincement of the DOE's operation in 1980, the United States has strived to provide quality, evidence based public education to all children. Regardless of gender, race, socioeconomic background, or ability level. The department ensures accountability for meeting legislative requirements pertaining to accessibility and learning standards. While there is always room for improvement, the Department of Education has helped ensure that American children have access to a free and appropriate public education.
As you know, having benefited from public education yourself, you know that public education is the only avenue to prepare children for higher education or simply the preparation for adult life in general. I have two daughters in public education, one of whom has been successful largely because of an IEP. This is very important to many Americans.
Rather than dismantling the department of education, please work to guarantee its continued funding and utilize its power to examine and strengthen our current public education system.
After all, I'm sure we can all agree that we want well-informed and equipped young adults to drive our communities forward in thoughtful, equitable, and effective ways.
