Oppose Unchecked Treasury Power Over Non-Profit Tax Statuses
To: Sen. Baldwin, Sen. Johnson
From: A constituent in Madison, WI
November 23
This bill concentrates excessive power in the executive branch by allowing the Secretary of Treasury to unilaterally designate and terminate the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations deemed "terrorist supporting organizations" with little oversight or due process. The criteria are vague, determinations could be made based on classified information without judicial review, and organizations have limited ability to challenge designations. This threatens the civil liberties of legitimate nonprofits by enabling abuse and politicization of this unchecked authority without meaningful safeguards. Protecting against terrorism financing is important, but this approach raises grave concerns over infringing on constitutional rights that must be addressed.
