Elections Should Proceed as Scheduled
To: Gov. Landry
From: A verified voter in Metairie, LA
May 1
Dear Governor Landry,
I am writing as a Louisiana constituent to express my strong opposition to the recent declaration of a state of emergency and the effort to delay upcoming elections in order to redraw congressional district maps.
At this point, absentee ballots have already been distributed and early voting is scheduled to begin imminently. Changing the election timeline now risks creating confusion among voters, undermining confidence in the process, and placing an unnecessary administrative burden on election officials who are already executing a live election.
Regardless of one’s position on district maps, the timing of this action is deeply concerning. Elections function best when rules are stable, predictable, and clearly communicated well in advance. Intervening at this late stage threatens voter participation and the integrity of the process itself.
A state of emergency is typically reserved for urgent threats to public safety or infrastructure. Using it in this context raises serious concerns about precedent and the appropriate scope of executive authority.
I urge you to allow the current election to proceed as scheduled and to address any necessary redistricting changes through a process that does not disrupt active voting or disenfranchise Louisiana voters.
