Dear Senator/Representative,
I am writing as a constituent to express deep concern about the growing political pressure surrounding the current conflict with Iran and the ways in which wartime messaging appears to be shaping public discourse in the United States.
A recent opinion column in USA Today warned that turning the Iran conflict into a campaign strategy for the 2026 midterm elections risks undermining responsible governance. Whether one agrees with the columnist’s political perspective or not, the core concern deserves serious attention: military decisions and wartime narratives must never be driven by electoral calculations.
The Constitution places Congress at the center of decisions about war and oversight of the executive branch. At a moment when tensions with Iran carry significant risks for American service members, regional stability, and global energy markets, it is essential that Congress exercise independent judgment rather than allow political messaging to dictate policy.
I urge you to publicly reaffirm three principles:
• That decisions about military force must be guided by national security and international law, not campaign strategy.
• That Congress must maintain robust oversight of any military escalation involving Iran.
• That the American public deserves transparent information rather than politically coordinated narratives about wartime developments.
History shows that public trust erodes when citizens believe military conflict is being used for political advantage. Clear leadership from Congress can help ensure that our democratic institutions remain stronger than partisan pressures.
Thank you for your service and for your attention to this issue.
