I am writing as a concerned constituent and a member of the Bosniak-American community to urge you to support stronger U.S. action in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The recent conviction of Milorad Dodik, the president of the Republika Srpska entity, for violating BiH’s constitutional order is a critical moment that demands a firm response from BiH institutions with the support of the U.S. Dodik's response was to defy BiH’s laws, bar state institutions from operating in the Republika Srpska entity, and making threats of violence unless leaders in Sarajevo abide by his blackmail. His actions jeopardize BiH’s stability and risk fomenting renewed conflict in the Balkans.
The U.S. has been a key partner in supporting BiH’s sovereignty and democratic institutions since it brokered the Dayton Peace Agreement. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to reaffirm that support by backing BiH’s judicial and law enforcement institutions. Dodik's conviction must not be ignored—he should be held accountable under the law, and any attempts to obstruct his arrest must be met with serious consequences. If the international community fails to act, it will only embolden those who seek to undermine U.S. interests in the region.
I urge you to advocate for decisive action, including strong diplomatic pressure and support for BiH institutions in enforcing the rule of law. The U.S. must not allow separatist leaders, backed by Russia, China and other American adversaries, to act with impunity. Ensuring that Dodik faces justice is not just about Bosnia and Herzegovina’s security. It is also a matter of preserving a landmark American peace initiative which, if allowed to fail, would significantly undermine U.S. national security.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I hope I can count on your support, and I would appreciate any updates on how your office is working to address these concerns.
