I received your email today about your proposed act to increase the number of American scientists and engineers. If you really believe we need more scientists and engineers, then: • Stop voting for budget bills that decrease funding for science agencies • Work to impeach the Secretary of HHS who is clearly anti-science, anti-vaccine, and pro-disease • Stop being silent as the administration makes politicized cuts and threats to organizations such as NSF, NIH, and the National Academies • Stop being silent as OMB seeks to put political appointees in charge of making science funding decisions for agencies such as NSF, NASA, and NIH • Speak out against Department of Education policies that hurt programs for students at all levels • Speak out about lawsuits against colleges and universities that seek to enroll minority students and end up having to spend funds that would have supported them as “settlements” instead • Say something about the discrimination towards foreign scholars that is leading to shortages of faculty, graduate students, and postdocs in some fields, thus impeding our research and educational capacities Those are only a few of the things that have occurred over the last few years that are damaging the US scientific enterprise and discouraging our young people from pursuing education as scientists and engineers. If you really care, then do something rather than a performative authorization bill that has no actual appropriations behind it — and likely won’t, because your party will vote for more tax breaks for the rich and spending on an illegal war against Iran.
