Request to uphold Governor Cooper’s veto of Senate Bill 382
To: Rep. Prather, Sen. Daniel
From: A constituent in Weaverville, NC
November 30
While disaster relief is urgently needed for those of us in WNC impacted by Hurricane Helene, I am deeply concerned that this bill ties critical relief funding to provisions that shift power away from our incoming elected officials. This feels like election-loss retribution and undermines our faith in our government.
North Carolinians need to see leaders working together—not against each other—to rebuild trust and address the pressing challenges of hurricane recovery, such as immediate rental assistance, small business support, and homeowner relief. Governor Cooper’s veto will create an opportunity for our elected officials to put partisan politics aside, work across the aisle, and truly serve the people of our state. It is a chance to rebuild what was lost and create a better future.
The Governor’s veto also allows for a more robust relief package to be enacted through proper legislative process and ensures that disaster relief efforts remain focused solely on helping those who need it most. Additionally, the people's mandate from the election should be respected by preventing these last-minute partisan maneuvers that consolidate power for the outgoing party. In support of democratic principles and effective disaster response, the Governor's veto is warranted and should stand. Thank you for your time and consideration.
