The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) plays a crucial role in providing humanitarian assistance and promoting development around the world. Dismantling or defunding this agency would severely undermine America's global leadership and ability to address critical issues like poverty, disease, and conflict. While a review of programs is warranted to ensure effective use of resources, a complete shutdown or drastic cuts to USAID's budget would be detrimental to millions of people who rely on its aid. It would also cede influence to adversaries like China and Russia who are expanding their foreign assistance efforts. Elon Musk and the President do not have the power to shut down USAID without congressional approval. I urge you to thoughtfully consider the consequences of dismantling USAID. This agency advances American interests by building stability, boosting economies, and projecting soft power. Its work aligns with our nation's values of compassion and global engagement. Rather than eliminating it, USAID should be empowered to carry out its vital mission effectively and transparently. The cost of abandoning development aid would be exponentially higher down the line.
