I am writing to you in strong opposition to H.R. 2616, misleadingly titled the “PROTECT Kids Act,” and H.R. 2617, the so-called “Don’t Say Trans Act.” As both a queer person and an educator, I am deeply concerned by the dangerous implications of these bills and the harm they would cause to LGBTQ+ youth, families, and educators across the country.
These pieces of legislation are not about protecting children—they are about erasing and silencing queer and trans identities under the guise of parental rights and moral panic. By restricting discussions of gender identity and sexual orientation in schools, these bills would foster fear, stigma, and censorship, further marginalizing already vulnerable students. As an educator, I have witnessed firsthand how vital it is for all students to see themselves reflected in curriculum and to know that their identities are valid and respected. These bills do the opposite.
H.R. 2616 and H.R. 2617 undermine the autonomy of educators and the rights of LGBTQ+ youth to exist openly and safely. They signal to queer and trans students that their existence is inappropriate, controversial, or shameful—when in fact, visibility and representation can be life-saving.
I urge you to oppose these bills and to stand on the side of inclusion, dignity, and truth. Our students deserve classrooms that affirm their identities, not ones that seek to erase them. I ask you to vote no on H.R. 2616 and H.R. 2617 and to advocate for legislation that uplifts and protects all young people, especially those who are most at risk.
