I am writing to express strong opposition to the newly announced tariffs from President Trump, including a universal 10% duty on all imported goods and higher “reciprocal tariffs” targeting specific countries, as reported by NPR on April 2, 2025. These tariffs are economically reckless and demand immediate congressional action. They will raise consumer prices, hurt Washington’s trade-dependent economy, provoke retaliation from key global partners, and cause market instability. China has already imposed a 34% tariff on U.S. imports, and the markets have taken a major hit—the worst since the COVID-19 pandemic. Congress and the Senate must act now to limit this executive overreach. I urge you to: 1. Support legislation to reclaim congressional authority over tariffs, such as reforming the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (Section 232) or the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA)—both of which have been used to justify broad, unilateral tariff actions. 2. Demand accountability and transparency for trade decisions that affect millions of American workers, businesses, and consumers. 3. Advance new legislation or revive prior bipartisan efforts like the Bicameral Congressional Trade Authority Act, which would require congressional approval for any tariffs imposed for national security or emergency reasons. Unchecked tariff power in the executive branch is damaging our economy and undermining congressional authority. Please take immediate steps to defend the economic well-being of your constituents and reassert Congress’s constitutional role in trade policy.
