Oppose FISA Section 702 Reauthorization Without Real Reforms

To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Davidson

From: A verified voter in Cincinnati, OH

April 29

I need you to oppose any clean reauthorization of FISA Section 702 when it comes up for a vote. Only support an extension if it includes significant reforms that protect Americans' privacy and civil liberties. Section 702 was designed to surveil foreign nationals, but the FBI has repeatedly abused it to access communications of peaceful protesters, federal and state lawmakers, Congressional staff, thousands of campaign donors, journalists, and even a judge reporting civil rights violations. Technology has advanced dramatically since 2008, from AI to the explosion of personal data available for purchase, yet the law hasn't kept pace. Over one hundred civil liberties groups warned Congress in a March 19th letter that new technological advancements will only create more opportunities for abuse. This law allows wiretapping and data collection without a warrant or court order, sweeping up information shared with or by American citizens. That's domestic surveillance dressed up as foreign intelligence. Vote no on any extension that doesn't include real reforms to close these loopholes and restore constitutional protections.
